What is Tanglewood Counselling’s approach & style?

Article by Dee-Anne Doak, MACP/RCC

Learn more about the style and approach of counselling that I employ here at Tanglewood Counselling in Nanaimo, BC.

What approach do you use?

My approach could be considered ‘eclectic’ or ‘integrative’. This means I create an individual treatment plan chosen from the most appropriate methodology (or combination of methodologies).

In other words, I do not use (or believe in) a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, each treatment plan is made to suit each unique persona and situation.

I believe in...

  • Working with unconditional positive regard
  • Supporting you to understand yourself better and improve awareness of patterns of behaviour
  • Helping you make decisions for the positive change you want
  • Respecting your values and priorities
  • Recognizing you are the expert of your life

By following the Client-Centred approach outlined above, I create an alliance with my clients. Research has shown that a quality therapeutic alliance formed between a client and their counsellor can improve counselling outcomes significantly.

What is your style?

I see myself as a guide or companion to walk alongside you. I strive to always offer authentic, warm, caring service.

The focus is on you, with no personal agenda on my part. I will ask a lot of questions and sometimes use humour to explore your perspectives and patterns and help you understand yourself better.
