Would you like to be my friend online? I’m flattered! But my social media practices generally limit me from engaging with clients online, and this page explains why.
While social media is a convenient mode of communication for personal and business use, it is generally not recommended for communication between counsellor and client.
Tanglewood’s social media policy follows best practices in the counselling profession. I’ve outlined some of my online do’s and don’ts below.
I do not search for clients on search engines or social media.
I prefer to get information about clients directly from them during our sessions. Additionally, social media profiles are not always representative of a person’s life, and may present a skewed portrait that I prefer to avoid.
I have professional social media pages that you can “follow” if you are interested.
I post some content related to wellness and mental health, as well as events or news about Tanglewood. It is up to you if you are comfortable engaging with a counselling page online.
I do not accept friend requests from clients on social media.
Being “friends” makes our relationship visible to the public. This can leave us open to questions about how we are connected. I prefer to avoid potential issues surrounding confidentiality.
(To be fair, I don’t have much of a personal social media presence anyway, so you’re not exactly missing out!)
Leaving a testimonial or public review for Tanglewood Counselling is always appreciated, but clients are under no obligation to do so.
If you are comfortable sharing your experience with others, either by word of mouth or online through platforms like Google or Facebook, know that your review can really help boost Tanglewood’s reach and therefore potential to help others.
If you have questions or concerns about my social media or online policies, please get in touch and I will be happy to clarify.
